Regional projects have dominated the 2017 Australian Institute of Architects’ National Architecture Awards

STANDOUT regional projects have dominated the 2017 Australian Institute of Architect’s awards.

Winners ranged from projects in the Pilbara to Darwin and the Daintree.

In all 44 projects were recognised in the awards.

Jury chair and Institute immediate past president Ken Maher said they gave preference to projects which showed what contribution architecture could make to the public good, projects which were inventive and those that showed an understanding of materials.

In terms of residential projects, The historic 1830s Captain Kelly’s Cottage, in Tasmania by John Wardle Architects won the Eleanor Cullis-Hill Award for Residential Architecture — Houses (Alterations and Additions) and a National Commendation for Heritage in what the jury described as ‘a labour of love and passion’.

It said the project had bought the residence from an “advanced state of decay’’ to a fresh beauty.

The prestigious Robin Boyd Award for Residential Architecture — Houses (New) was won by Durbach Block Jaggers Architects for Tamarama House with what the jury described as “sublime detailing and beautifully sculpted spaces’’.

The residential architecture — multiple housing award went to Tropology for DHA by Troppo Architects (NT).

A Queensland property, Tent House by Sparks Architects took out the People’s Choice Award.
