Winners of the biggest architecture prize in Britain for 2019 have been announced.

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) awards recognise the most significant contributions to British architecture in the past year.

There is a huge range across the 54 winning projects from a new high-rise residential block on the River Thames to a modern, energy efficient council development in Norwich.

It is not just new buildings that are eligible to be nominated: many of the awards go to refurbishments and restoration efforts such as the updated Preston Bus Station.

Each of the nominated projects have previously won prizes in the RIBA Regional awards, the winners of which form the shortlist for the nationals.

The Independent has compiled the best of the winners in the gallery above.
