The Longfellow Hotel in Portland’s historic West End has been named among 20 stunning new hotels for global inspiration by Architectural Digest as part of the magazine’s 2024 Hotel Great Design Awards. The awards celebrate the best designed new hotels in the world.

The 48-room boutique hotel from Maine-based family-owned hospitality group Uncommon Hospitality is named after poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, a native of Portland. The hotel, designed by Post Company, is billed as the first independent, full-service hotel to open in the city in more than two decades.

“Our design for The Longfellow honors the city’s history and wild beauty, and also nods to the integrity of the surrounding buildings,” Jou-Yie Chou, partner at Post Company, said in a press release. “The interiors feel familiar, yet impart a true sense of place, by blending contemporary elements with traditional touches to evoke a modern timelessness. The design establishes a sequence of spaces that invites visitors in, while handsome details encourage them to linger and indulge.”

The guest rooms offer “a restrained and balanced design scheme, with enduring, well-crafted details,” according to the team, and include natural wood paneling, wide-plank oak floors, velvet upholstered beds, and Windsor-style chairs. The Evangeline or Gabriel Suites offer freestanding soaking tubs and separate living spaces.

“Guests can choose from an array of room categories, ranging from Back Cove views or inviting balconies prime for stunning sunrise views, to rooms with a windowside desk providing inspiration for writers, poets and wordsmiths of all kinds,” according to the company.

The Longfellow offers Mattress Concierge-selected mattresses made by hand with high-density foam in New England. Each room has spa-quality robes, specialty alarm clocks, and “ideal sleeping conditions as certified by Sleep Wise Consulting,” according to the hotel’s website.

European-influenced Five of Clubs offers plush seating, natural stone, warm brass elements, and artwork inspired by the natural landscape. The restaurant, inspired by the five-man literary society founded by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, serves a health-conscious menu as well as classic and zero-proof cocktails, beer from Portland breweries, a sommelier-selected wine list.

The 1,800-square-foot Astraea, the hotel’s wellness spa, is a “soft and serene” space with private infrared sauna rooms, massage rooms, and state-of-the-art meditation loungers. Guests enjoy Voya products and hand-crafted items by local Maine producers and artisans.

Hotel guests have access to complimentary bikes, electric vehicle charging stations, and an electric luxury car service to nearby Old Port.

Earlier this year, Town & Country named the Longfellow Hotel among the best new hotels on the planet as part of its T&C Hotel Awards 2024.
