Garuda Indonesia and Tourism Australia Resume Deal to Promote Flights, Destinations
Jakarta. National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia and Tourism Australia have signed a partnership agreement aimed at resuming cooperation in promoting the airline's flights to destinations Down Under.
Nina Sulistyowati, director for marketing and information technology at Garuda Indonesia, and Brent Anderson, general manager for Southeast Asia at Tourism Australia, attended the signing ceremony at the airline's offices in Central Jakarta on Friday (03/11).
The agreement is an extension of a previous partnership between the two companies that started in 2014, and it involves Tourism Australia promoting Garuda Indonesia flights to cities such as Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.
Nina expressed hope that the partnership would boost passenger numbers, especially by capturing potential new market segments.
"Australia is one of the fastest growing potential markets for Garuda Indonesia. Both countries receive many tourists from each other," Nina said in a statement.
The cooperation may also provide Garuda Indonesia passengers with added value as part of the company's own take on the Kangaroo Route, which involves direct flights between London and Melbourne. Travelers between Britain and Australia will be able to travel to Jakarta, where they can catch connecting flights at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport's Terminal 3 after a two-hour transit.
This will allow Garuda Indonesia to offer flight connections to all travelers departing from Australia and continuing flights to the airline's other routes.
"We are delighted to work together with Garuda Indonesia, to share what Australia has to offer tourists, ranging from the natural setting and flora and fauna in Perth, iconic buildings in Sydney, to Melbourne's unique architecture," Anderson said.
The number of tourists traveling from Indonesia to Australia increased by 17 percent as of September this year, Anderson said, citing Australian Bureau of Statistics data. He said this number is also supported by a strong partnership with Garuda Indonesia.
Garuda Indonesia operates more than 60 direct flights per week to Australia, connecting Jakarta and Denpasar, Bali, to cities such as Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.
