MINSK, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Belarusian farm sector has already cropped more than 5 million tonnes of grain, the Agriculture and Food Ministry said Monday.

As of Aug. 14, its grain harvest has exceeded 5 million tonnes. A total of about 1.4 million hectares (14,000 square km), or 64.8 percent of areas under crops have been harvested in the country.

The average yield is 36 centners per hectare (about 163.3 tonnes per square km) this year. The highest yield is recorded in the Grodno region in the west of the country, reaching 44.3 centners per hectare (about 200.9 tonnes per square km).

In 2017, Belarus hopes to reap about 10 million tonnes of grain crops, said Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Earlier, Lukashenko instructed that the harvesting of cereals be completed by Aug. 20.
