Interior designer Tim Hobby has admired this contemporary stunner in his Ansley Park neighborhood since before it was completed in 2014. Set on a half-acre lot that was previously home to an apartment building ruined by fire, the house was designed by the cutting-edge architecture team Cara Cummins and Jose Tavel of TaC Studios. “There are so many things I love about it,” says Hobby, who is the co-owner of HA Modern, the glam Minotti showroom at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center. For starters, there’s the connection with its environment: Cummins and Tavel intently studied for months to come up with a design that felt just right for the historic neighborhood and its sweeping canopy. With granite and limestone construction as well as generous terraces with retractable screens and sliding glass walls, the house is immersed in the natural surroundings of oaks and magnolias. So intent were the architects to honor nature that they used the wood from a dying pecan and red oak on the site for the kitchen counter, tables, and even the Murphy bed and a key drop. Hobby, a friend of the architects, was introduced to the art-collecting homeowners, who offered him a tour. “There’s a mixture of materials that gives the house incredible warmth,” Hobby says. “And the setting—it’s absolutely stunning to see a modern house in the trees on a hill overlooking Winn Park and Midtown Atlanta.”
