The London Art Fair opens this week, as ever showing the breadth of artistic talent around the globe.

A maze of group displays, curated spaces, installations and solo exhibitions is taking over Islington’s Business Design Centre from Wednesday.

If all that art seems a little overwhelming, we’ve broken it down with the need-to-know info.

What is the London Art Fair?

Showcasing the best international modern and contemporary art, the London Art Fair gives the chance to buy new pieces or simply enjoy the view. With more than 100 exhibitors descending on the five day event, emerging artists appear alongside household names, kickstarting the art fair calendar for the year.

Which artists are at the 2019 London Art Fair?

Galleries from South Korea, Canada, Puerto Rico and Japan are among the participating presenters. Pieces by living artists Grayson Perry, David Hockney and Banksy are on show alongside those by Joan Miro, Anthony Caro, Salvador Dali and Henry Moore. This year’s fair will have a heavy focus on prints, with new works and releases from David Shrigley, the Chapman Brothers and Lucien Freud.

Alongside the main fair is Art Projects, now in its 15th edition, a platform for new galleries to showcase contemporary works. This includes the Dialogues section, which sees pairs of galleries collaborate in a shared presentation, this year focusing on the contemporary artists of Latin America and Europe.

There’s also the annual Photo 50 exhibition, this year focusing on family. “Who’s Looking at the family, now?” sees a group of contemporary photographers investigating the fundamental questions around family life and how the internal and external worlds collide when it comes to issues of class, race and identity.

As ever, there's a chance to join the conversation, with artist talks and discussions on topics such as the relationship between art and money, revealing invisible histories and preserving the memory of architecture through photography.

When and where is London Art Fair?

The Business Design Centre in Islington has been home to the fair since its inception in 1989. Running from January 16-20, it opens every day at 11am, closing at 9pm January 16-17, 7pm on January 18, 7:30pm on January 19 and 5pm on January 20.
