Perth Theatre has been shortlisted for a top architecture award.

The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) has announced its list of buildings up for being named as the best in Scotland this year, including Perth Theatre.

The Edwardian B-listed building was reopened in 2017 after an extensive £16.6 million revamp by Richard Murphy Architects, which saw its old auditorium brought back to life and a brand new studio theatre built, along with a bar and a number of rehearsal spaces.

Mike Griffiths, interim chief executive for Horsecross Arts, the creative organisation behind the theatre, said: “We are delighted that Perth Theatre has been shortlisted in the RIAS awards for 2019.

“In the year and a bit since the theatre reopened following its restoration and redevelopment, visitors have been overwhelmingly complimentary about the theatre.

“As well as being a stunning building, the newly created and freshly restored spaces have allowed us to hit the ground running in terms of welcoming customers to our cafes, audiences into our auditoriums, community participants into our workshop rooms and businesses into our meeting areas.

“The transformed theatre is a fantastically versatile place, a busy hub in the heart of the city for everyone and anyone to come and enjoy.”

Judging will take place at the end of this month, and the winners will be announced at a dinner in the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh on Thursday, May 30.

The building will have to see off stiff competition from a range of other architectural feats, including the V&A Museum in Dundee, Brodie Castle’s garden visitor centre in Forres, the headquarters of the Cairngorms National Park Authority in Grantown-on-Spey, and a range of new build schools.

Robin Webster, president of RIAS, said: “This year’s judges were struck by the continuing high standard of submissions and found shortlisting very difficult indeed.

“This is an impressive list of buildings that all show the ambitious level of excellence that architects and their clients can achieve, and I hope that communities, government and local authorities, along with everyone else who needs to procure buildings will look at these examples and ensure that their ambitions match them.

“Our awards celebrate the very best that is being built in Scotland.”
