Exhibit Is Coming To London Next Summer

This article is more than 4 years old.

In summer 2020, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum is hosting the world’s most comprehensive exhibition centered around the iconic tale of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Running from June 27, 2020 through January 10, 2021, Alice: Down the Rabbit Hole promises to be a theatrical and immersive experience centered around not only the original Alice in Wonderland story but also its countless iterations throughout the years.

Featuring works from artists, filmmakers, designers and multimedia creatives from all around the world and all different time periods, this show will examine the cross-cultural and lasting appeal of the Alice archetype and investigate how Wonderland has become such a ever-flowing source of creative inspiration throughout the decades.

The exhibit will chart the story’s evolution from its inception in 1865 by Lewis Carroll through to its omnipresence in contemporary culture. The full details of the exhibit are still forthcoming, but at present, visitors can expect to discover haunting original illustrations by John Tenniel; early concept art from the 1951 Walt Disney film adaptation; and even surrealists sketches by Salvador Dalí. Tickets to the exhibition are not yet on sale, but expect tickets down this rabbit hole to sell out fast.

The Victoria and Albert Museum is one of London’s most impressive museums. Admission is free (though there are charges for special exhibitions, such as this one). Other exhibitions to look forward to in 2020 include:

Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk (February 29, 2020 – June 21, 2020): An exhibition exploring the sartorial, aesthetic and social significance of the kimono from the 1660s to present day, both in Japan and beyond.

Bags: Inside Out
(April 25, 2020 – January 3, 2021): An exhibition of over 300 bags from around the world, from the 16th century to present day.

Renaissance Watercolours: from Dürer to Van Dyck (May 16, 2020 –September 20, 2020 ): An exhibition of 200 rarely-seen watercolor masterpieces painted during the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery.

Epic Iran (October 17, 2020 – April 4, 2021): The UK’s first major exhibition on Iranian culture in over 90 years, exploring 5,000 years of culture via 300 objects that date from 3000 BCE to present day.
