A client who was living overseas, a complex ‘U’ shaped design and the sheer scale of the 520sqm project were among the challenges Hocking Constructions had to contend with in building this expansive Hazelwood Park home.
But the effort that went into this luxurious two-storey build, which took 18 months to complete and showcases gentle curves, paid off when it won Hocking Constructions the HIA-CSR South Australian Home of the Year at the 2020 HIA Awards.

“The house appears as a ‘U’ shape, featuring a large internal garden,” Hocking Constructions’ director Paul Hocking says. “The sheer size of the build was very challenging, it was crucial to maintain straight and parallel lines, with polished concrete floors there are no second chances.”
Designed by Max Pritchard Gunner Architects for a family with three children, the home includes two levels, four bedrooms, multiple bathrooms and living areas, an office, a sunken lounge and his-and-her garages, plus a huge outdoor entertaining zone and curved deck that wraps along one side all the way to the swimming pool.

Paul says the design brief sounds simple on paper: “A family home for three children, featuring a children’s rumpus and parents’ retreat. The exterior outlook was to maximise the park view, while maintaining privacy and complementing the surroundings.”
Maintaining the northern light to the living zones was imperative so layers of roofline were lifted to the northerly aspect and an electric louvre roof incorporated to the outdoor zone.
“From the front, the house consists of his-and her garages,” Paul says.

“His side has a tool shed, wine cellar, office and guest bathroom. On her side, it’s a mud room and walk-in pantry, that flows through to the stunning kitchen and open plan living. The kitchen has the largest island we have made at 5.5m and with a stunning 1.6m cantilever overhang.

“The second level solely features the parents’ retreat with master bedroom, walk-in robe, ensuite and private terrace.
“The home nestles around the internal garden space, with an outdoor kitchen and dining, wraparound deck and swimming pool.”
Paul says to soften and open the design, curved wall sections were strategically added, posing challenges in curving materials neatly which often don’t like to bend.
Externally, the home features solid brick construction with a texture coating, James Hardie’s Scyon cement sheets and corrugated iron, with jarrah battens to its facade.

With around 100 windows, Paul says the northerly light that streams in is a highlight of this stunning home.
“The light is not only beautiful, but keeps the house warm in winter,” Paul says.
“The clients were also very conscious of sustainability, the house features double glazing, hydronic underfloor heating, filtered rainwater storage and solar power.”
This is the second consecutive year Hocking Constructions has won the HIA-CSR SA Home of the Year, and the third time overall, and Paul says the team were delighted.

“We were ecstatic, to win back-to-back awards; it is an honour to win one, let alone two in a row,” Paul says.
“The awards are a fantastic recognition of our team’s skill, effort and passion for building excellence. As a business, it gives our clients confidence in knowing they are building with
the best.”
The home and Hocking Constructions, along with 17 other state winners, will now represent South Australia at next year’s national HIA-CSR Australian Housing Awards.
