2022 Skoda Enyaq iV GT Coupe Is Czechia’s Affordable BMW X6 Surrogate EV

Not long after revealing its first purpose-built electric car, the Enyaq iV crossover, Skoda is now preparing to unveil its sportier-looking brother.

We’ve caught pre-production prototypes of the coupe-SUV before, but this is the first time that we see one that’s practically camouflage-free, at least until your sight reaches the middle of the car, with the rear part of the model still being heavily covered.

That said, the overall BMW X6-like shape of the car is evident, with the front-end being largely identical to that of its more civilian-looking brother.

Tentatively named the Enyaq iV Coupe or GT, the all-electric crossover will be the second Skoda production model to be based on Volkswagen’s so-called Modular Electrification Toolkit (MEB).

Essentially a skateboard platform, the modular architecture incorporates the battery into the floors to save space and can offer single- or dual-motor powertrains that can offer either RWD or all-wheel-drive capabilities.

While the Enyaq iV is available with three battery sizes, five power outputs and either RWD or AWD, the coupe-SUV version is likely to only share the more powerful motors to further emphasize its sportier nature.

Both models are set to be the only European MEB-based cars not to be built in Germany, with Skoda’s Mlada Boleslav plant more than able to manufacture them.

In top RS spec, the Skoda Enyaq iV GT is expected to deliver a combined output of 306 horsepower from the front and rear electric motors, while an 82-kWh (77 kWh net) Li-Ion battery should give it a range of around 480 km (300 miles).

Less powerful versions with an even higher range should also be available, with the GT having the upper hand in this department thanks to the smoother and likely more aerodynamic body.

The model is expected to be unveiled in the second half of 2021 and it will go against more established electric crossovers from Hyundai and Kia while having a sportier flair.

Volkswagen is also set to launch a slightly more upscale version of the model to be called the ID.5, as part of the VAG Group’s MEB offensive in the next few years.
