New Hampshire man faces felony charges after discovery of fentanyl

Kittery police say a police dog was used to detect the drugs hidden in the suspect's car.

Officials say a police dog helped track down deadly drugs hidden inside a car in Kittery early Monday morning, leading to the arrest of a New Hampshire man. Local officers were reportedly investigating a suspicious car parked at around 1:45 a.m. near the Kittery Outlets. That's when officials say the officers became suspicious that drugs were hidden inside the vehicle. York Police Sgt. Jon Rogers and his partner Gunther were called to the scene. After smelling the car, Gunther alerted officers to the presence of drugs. A search of the car revealed 81.6 grams of suspected fentanyl, and 28.6 grams of suspected methamphetamine. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, a deadly dose of fentanyl is typically considered 2 milligrams, meaning the suspected fentanyl seized in Kittery could have killed 40,800 people. Donald Efthimiou, 46, of Rochester, New Hampshire, is now charged with felony counts of aggravated tracking in fentanyl and unlawful trafficking in scheduled drugs. Efthimiou's bail was set to $5,000 before he was taken to the York County Jail.
