An Irish man, 29, has died following an accident near a ski resort in southwestern Bulgaria.

A spokesperson for Razlog hospital told RTÉ News that the man passed away from serious injuries sustained during a fall near the Bansko mountain ski resort.

In a statement, the Bulgarian Red Cross said the man was critically injured yesterday after an incident near the Todorka mountain peak.

The man was brought by ambulance to hospital, where he died from his injuries.

"According to initial information, the tourist was part of a group taking photos in front of a scenic background when he lost his balance and fell from a height of about 600 metres," the Red Cross said.

The mountain rescue service of the Red Cross determined that the man's condition was "very serious" and said that it had requested the assistance of a medical helicopter.

However, due to technical issues, the helicopter's mission was aborted and the service was instead forced to transfer the man to hospital by road.

A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs said that it was "aware of the case and is providing consular assistance".

"As with all consular cases, the Department does not comment on the details of individual cases," they added.
