Officials from Georgia and Armenia on Thursday met in the 14th session of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between the two countries in Yerevan, with the meeting co-chaired by prime ministers Irakli Kobakhidze and Nikol Pashinyan.

The meeting discussed “positive dynamics” in the development of relations in various sectors, trade and economic cooperation and utilisation of opportunities created by free trade agreements, the Georgian Government Administration said.

The parties also reviewed large-scale transport and infrastructure projects, the importance of ties in tourism and digital economy, and development of transit corridors, with the PMs signing the protocol of the session following the conclusion of the Commission meeting.

In his remarks during the session, Kobakhidze emphasised the significance of close cooperation between the two states to “jointly protect the national interests of our countries”.

Our relations, partnership and friendship have a very solid historical foundation. This is a unique friendship that binds the Georgian and Armenian peoples together. [...] These relations have been translated into political terms into signing of the declaration of strategic partnership [last year], which will raise the cooperation to a new level and is a very good basis for us to further deepen our political ties, economic and other relations”, he said.

The PM further stated his Government had “always expressed its readiness to support and contribute to the establishment of stability and peace” in the South Caucasus region, highlighted the mutual support between the two countries for each other’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and thanked the Armenian Government for its “unwavering support” for Georgia.

On his part, Pashinyan stressed the session’s importance for discussing “very specific issues, decisions, [and] agreements” that had a “direct impact on our countries and the well-being of our societies, and also strengthen our relations”.

This cooperation is an idea to which we are committed, and on the basis of a specific policy, we can work in this direction. We fully respect each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. We have a good understanding of how important peace and stability are in the Caucasus. We are taking every step to move towards this goal”, Pashinyan noted.

He also highlighted “great achievements” in cooperation in communication, energy, information technology, security, healthcare, education, culture and people-to-people contacts.
