Central Elementary School third-grader Thomas LuGrain awoke on Tuesday, April 8, without a clue about what the day would hold for him. He had no idea he would be reunited with his dad, U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Michael LuGrain, who spent a year deployed and surprised his only son on Tuesday inside the Banning classroom. Several regional news teams and local dignitaries were on site to capture the emotional moments of the reunion.
The surprise occurred in Laura Ruano’s third-grade class, whose students were under the impression that the news reporters were there to learn more about “Earth Day” and recycling.
The students asked the guests questions about ways they recycle at home. There was a slight lull in the conversation when Michael LuGrain walked into the classroom, wearing his military uniform.

Thomas LuGrain reads a book to his father, before showing him the classroom.
It took a moment to process what was happening, and Thomas LuGrain looked up at his father with a gaping mouth that quickly turned into a big smile. During the embrace, some of those watching the scene unfold became emotional.
His father promised to be back home before Thomas LuGrain’s birthday, and he kept the promise.
Michael LuGrain has been deployed overseas four times and said he is always grateful to “come home.”
“To be home, in my view, isn't necessarily about a physical place, especially in the military,” said Michael LuGrain. “It's more of a mentality, a feeling of belonging and comfort that comes from the people around you. Being with my family, for example, brings me happiness because it reassures me that I'm safe and supported. When you're surrounded by loved ones, you can get things done together and feel truly at peace, no matter where you are.”
Thomas’s mother, grandmother and cousin were also there to witness the joyful reunion.
Thomas LuGrain said he was “just happy and surprised.”
“This is what community and connection are all about,” said Principal Marcia Cole-Fijabi. “To witness such a powerful and personal moment reminded all of us of the strength and sacrifice our military families endure. We’re honored that this reunion happened in our school.”
