Slovak Film Week also brings an important reflection on work

Slovak Film Week began on Tuesday at Kino Lumiére in Bratislava and will continue until April 27. Ten Slovak films (six feature films, three documentaries and one animated film), as well as five short films, which were all nominated for the Slnko v sieti (Sun in a Net) Awards, will be screened at the 11th edition of the event. The program includes Vlny (Waves), which won nine awards, Ema and Smrtihlav (The Hungarian Dressmaker) with five awards, the best documentary film Prezidentka (Ms. President), and the winning animated film Ked život chutí (Living large) which also won at Slnko v sieti in the Best Film Music category.

“The year 2024 was the most successful in Slovak cinema since the country gained independence. Slovak films attracted 1,505,768 viewers, and for the first time, gross box office revenues exceeded 10 m EUR," said the programme director Miroslav Ulman.

Slovak Film Week is also an important platform for public discussions and reflection on Slovak film production. Panel discussions on documentaries, features, and animated films, plus other accompanying programmes will be part of the showcase.

This year’s edition will feature films by director and screenwriter Miloslav Luther, the 2024 laureate of the Outstanding Contribution to Slovak Audiovisual Culture award. The organizers will honor his work with the screening of three films - Chodník cez Dunaj, Last Cocktail, and Escape to Buda (director's cut). Before the screening of the film Last Cocktail, an adaptation of the play by Sławomir Mrozek, a "Laudácio for Miloslav Luther" will be held on Friday, April 25, and will be delivered by Peter Michalovič.

Other feature films to be screened include Spiaci účet (The Dormant Account), Vojna policajtov (Cop war), MIKI, Smršť (Whirlwind).  The documentary selection will include Architektúra ČSSR 58-89 (The Architecture 58-89) and Wishing on a Star.
