Govan has led LACMA since 2006. In his time at the museum, he has helped transform the 20-acre campus, aiding its acquisition of nearly 35,000 pieces. The acquisitions have helped the museum expand its collection of pieces from Latin America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific. LACMA is currently undergoing a more than $750 million expansion which will include the addition of the David Geffen Galleries, a new theater, education spaces, restaurants, event space and more. Prior to joining LACMA, Govan was president and director of the Dia Art Foundation in New York from 1994 to 2006 where he created Dia:Beacon. Before that, he was deputy director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and helped found MASS MoCA while at Williams College.
