The National Weather Service said Tropical Depression 02W doesn’t pose a threat to Guam as it is far north and away from the area, but residents can expect wet weather this weekend and next week.
The tropical disturbance near the northern Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Invest 55W, was upgraded to Tropical Depression 02W early Monday morning by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
As of 7 a.m. Monday, it was 745 miles north of Guam and moving northwest at 9 mph with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph.
Tropical Depression 02W is the second tropical cyclone to form in the western North Pacific in 2025, NWS said.
The storm will continue to move away from the Marianas and has now exited the NWS Guam area of responsibility, passing north of 25N.
According to NWS, the weather alert for the tropical depression aims to bring general attention to the potential for wetter weather this weekend, perhaps associated with another tropical disturbance in the region.
Some numerical forecast models have indicated the possibility of a tropical disturbance developing in the vicinity of the Marianas later this week.
At this time, there are no disturbances observed near the Marianas, but NWS Guam said it will keep a close watch on regional weather patterns.
Regional weather patterns will favor wetter conditions this week, particularly through the weekend and into next week.
Residents of the Marianas should keep a close watch on weather forecasts and discussions now and through the week at www.weather.gov/gum.
As is typical in the wet season, weather conditions and forecasts can change significantly in a short time, NWS said.
