Igloo Insurance opens in Middletown to serve Central PA
Focus on commercial and personal insurance lines
Targets industries like healthcare, manufacturing, and more
Seeing a need for additional insurance coverage in Dauphin and Lancaster counties, Brian Mahon is seeking to fill it.
The 29-year-old Treasurer of the Manheim Township Public Library foundation, Mahon has opened Igloo Insurance, an independent insurance agency located at 1801 Oberlin Road in Middletown, and is looking to building relationships along 283 from Harrisburg to Lancaster.
“I’ve worked in startups and established firms like Engle Hambright and Davies,” said Mahon. “In addition, I’m pursuing my MBA at Penn State. “
Mahon said the insurance industry is often overlooked by new graduates and noted that the average insurance agent is age 55.
“We’re bringing a modern, digital marketing, transparent approach to the industry that I think will resonate with many families and business owners who are struggling with the rising cost of insurance,” said Mahon.
Mahon described his new company as a tech-driven insurance agency specializing in commercial, life, and personal lines insurance. He said Igloo Insurance will target the following classes of business:
Igloo Insurance will also target individuals and families, and will leverage its expertise in cyber liability, property & casualty insurance, and strategic risk management.
“Our agency stands out with a cutting-edge digital marketing approach, ensuring seamless customer experience and efficient lead generation while leaving the human experience intact,” said Mahon.
Mahon cited several reasons for choosing “Igloo” for his agency.
“The name has a ton of symbolism and marketing angles to it,” Mahon said. “First, I love alliteration, so Igloo Insurance has “I “and “I” which makes it easy to remember. Igloos are, of course, a shelter made out of snow that the Inuit tribes of North America relied on. They were resourceful (used what building materials they had), they were temporary and provided warmth/shelter in a storm.
“The way we go about the insurance business is very similar. It provides mental and financial comfort in a tough time, we’re looking to be nimble and resourceful, use what we must grow, and of course insurance coverage for asset protection isn’t static or forever, it’s temporary and changes with the policy holder’s risk.”
That Pennsylvania is declining in overall population doesn’t faze Mahon, who knows the counties his agency serves are growing in population. Mahon notes that Cumberland County is growing at 4%, Adams County and Chester County at 3%, and York County at 2%. Lebanon, Lancaster, Franklin, Perry, and Dauphin counties are growing at 1%.
Mahon also noted that South Central Pennsylvania has healthcare that ranks 14th nationally, that the commonwealth is the 6th largest manufacturing state, and that the professional services industry is fueled by the nearby state capital.
“We are looking to align ourselves within these niches,” said Mahon. “We will do so by using strategic intent data from tools like Apollo, GodMode, and Insurance Ex-Dates strategically prospect within our defined niches. We’ll have in-person involvement with trade associations like The PA Association of Community Health Centers, and The York Manufacturer’s Association, specialized content, and niche insurance carrier offerings.”
Igloo Insurance is strategically situated between Lancaster and Harrisburg, off 283 through Mount Joy and Elizabethtown. The plan, Mahon said, is to take advantage of the growing South Central Pennsylvania market.
Mahon’s experience in the insurance industry entails eight years in sales, risk consulting, and brokerage operations. His previous roles at Engle Hambright & Davies, Keller Stonebraker Insurance, and startups Avatar Brokers Inc., and Cyber Sainik LLC provided experience in prospecting, account management, consultative sales, and agency operations.
Mahon said a key person to his agency is Brandon Dendas, whose digital marketing agency Convirtue is dedicated to independent insurance agents.
“He has a deep understanding of the insurance industry and specializes in helping agencies grow through strategic marketing, lead generation, and client engagement,” said Mahon. “Brandon is known for his expertise in digital marketing, branding, and automation, enabling insurance professionals to scale their businesses effectively.”
Mahon said Igloo Insurance is seeking a 60/40 split between personal lines (Home, Auto, & and Commercial Property) – and Casualty Lines (General Liability, Business Auto, Worker’s Comp, Professional Liability etc.).
While Mahon sees opportunities, he also sees potential threats.
“One is competition,” he said. “There are numerous capable independent insurance agencies in South Central PA, some private equity backed. Writing commercial insurance is difficult due to this. We also have a non-compete agreement that ends November 2026, so we have to be mindful.
“We also see climate change and extreme weather events like the Michaux State Forest wildfire near Chambersburg as a threat that may change the insurance landscape in South Central PA.
“Regardless of these threats,” Mahon added, “we are excited to launch Igloo Insurance and look forward to the years ahead.”
