An evening of fun and energy awaits New Zealanders of all communities as ‘Sawan Milan’ gets on its course at the Mount Roskill Tennis Club located at 34 Foch Avenue, Mt Roskill on July 5, 2025.

Organised by the Uttar Pradesh Association of New Zealand, the event will be held from 12 pm to 3 pm with Consul General of India in Auckland Dr Madan Mohan Sethi as the Chief Guest.

Organiser, Founder-President and Patron Suman Kapoor said that Sawan Milan is a joyful celebration honouring the monsoon season, feminine energy, and the sacred bonds of spirituality.

“The atmosphere promises to be vibrant and uplifting, with women adorned in traditional green attire, intricate mehndi designs, festive jewellery, radiant smiles, and the joyous rhythm of songs, dance, laughter, and sumptuous food. The event also embraces Hindi, one of the official languages of India, along with Bhojpuri (often known as Fiji Hindi) dialect,” she said.

Ms Kapoor said that Uttar Pradesh, regarded as the Hindi heartland of India, provides a cultural backdrop for this gathering.

“Sawan Milan will serve as a platform to showcase the talents of children as we pass on our rich heritage to the next generation. Local artists will enchant the audience with a beautiful blend of folk and contemporary melodies, including the soulful strains of Kajri,” she said.

About the Uttar Pradesh Association

The Uttar Pradesh Association of New Zealand was established in 2019 as a community-based, non-profit organisation dedicated to fostering unity, supporting business initiatives, promoting welfare, and facilitating tours to Uttar Pradesh. Its mission is to enrich the understanding and celebrate the heritage of people from the Hindi heartland.

“The Committee has resolved to organise programmes to strengthen team cohesion, fostering trade and tourism and promoting the cultural richness of the largest state of India,” Ms Kapoor said.

About Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state of India, stands as a remarkable confluence of antiquity, cultural richness, and contemporary dynamism. Nestled in the heart of the Indo-Gangetic plain, it is a land where civilisations have flourished for millennia, giving rise to spiritual traditions, majestic architecture, and a vibrant tapestry of languages, arts, and communities.

Historically, Uttar Pradesh has been the cradle of several great empires, from the Mauryas and Guptas to the Mughals. Its ancient cities, including Varanasi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, and Mathura, are steeped in religious significance and are among the holiest sites for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Muslims alike. These sacred places continue to attract millions of pilgrims and seekers each year.

Culturally, Uttar Pradesh is a mosaic of folk traditions, classical arts, and festive celebrations. From the evocative strains of thumri and Kajri to the intricate grace of Kathak dance, the state has nurtured expressions that resonate well beyond its borders. Its rich culinary heritage, featuring delicacies such as Kebabs, Kachoris, and sweets like Peda and Jalebi, offers a sensory journey through its diverse regions.

The Hindi language and its dialects Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Braj, and Bundeli, flourish here, lending voice to the oral and literary traditions that have shaped Indian thought and storytelling for centuries.

In contemporary times, Uttar Pradesh is an emerging powerhouse in agriculture, industry, and infrastructure. With a youthful population and a strategic location, it plays a pivotal role in India’s socio-economic narrative.

Yet, beyond all statistics and achievements, the true essence of Uttar Pradesh lies in its spirit—one of resilience, warmth, and enduring faith. It is a land that remembers its past with reverence while embracing the future with vigour, embodying the timeless ideal of unity in diversity.
