First Hawaii boat “HALAWA” crosses finish line in 2025 Transpac Race

HONOLULU (Island News) – The first boat from Hawaii has crossed the finish line of the 2025 Transpac Race!

“HALAWA,” an Andrews 56 from the Waikiki Yacht Club, is currently in second place for Division 5, and 19th place in overall provisional results

The local yacht crew departed Long Beach, California on Tuesday, July 1, and reached the shores of Diamond Head on Sunday, July 13, taking approximately 10 days and 3 hours.

“HALAWA” was skippered by Kimo Winterbottom alongside an 11-person crew.

Halawa's crew returns after an epic 2,200-mile journey, arriving at Diamond Head in just over 11 days.

According to the sailors, the boat carries the spirit of Kimo’s late father, Gary “Skip” Winterbottom, a beloved figure in the local sailing community.

The team now awaits the arrival of the remaining boats in the 2025 Transpac Race to learn its final placement results.

Meanwhile, two other boats with Hawaii ties are expected to finish in the coming days, including the Hawaii Yacht Club in Division 8.

Plus, the California State University Maritime Academy Vessel in Division 5, which is the only collegiate entry in the race, and is skippered by several Native Hawaiian crew members.
