FREE GUN LOCK DISTRIBUTION | For a limited time while supplies last, you can get up to two cable gun locks at no cost, at any Ventura County Library (VCL) branch. Gun-related deaths are the number one cause of death for children and teens in the United States due to unsecured firearms in homes. Along with local law enforcement and the library, you can be a part of the solution to help reduce these deaths. To help ensure the health and safety of young people, as well as those who might want to hurt themselves or others, VCL is participating in the Gun Lock Distribution Program. NATIONAL EMPTY THE SHELTERS EVENT | Through July 19. Bissell Pet Foundation’s Empty the Shelters Event, the nation’s largest funded adoption event, returns this summer to the Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center. (SPARC.) This lifesaving initiative helps make adoption more affordable by sponsoring reduced fees of $70 or less. Since 2016, Empty the Shelters has helped more than 324,000 pets find loving homes. DEMENTIA GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP | Every other Thursday, 1-2:30 p.m. Grief following death is anticipated and accepted, and closure is possible eventually as we deal with our loss. However, there is another form of grief, that we call “anticipatory grief”, when our loved one is still with us, but slowly declining before our eyes because of dementia. Families with loved ones who have dementia have unique situations, but all experience this kind of pre-death grief – grieving a person while they are still physically present.
