The overdue momentum to remove various Confederate symbols, especially some 1,500 statues, from their perches has picked up across the country in the wake of right-wing violence in Charlottesville. In Gainesville, Florida, Durham, North Carolina, and Baltimore, the toppling has already begun. In some cases, state or local authorities have driven the process. In others, activists have seized the initiative to speed things up.
Yet despite the growing consensus that the “dangerous totems” (as Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings has dubbed them) must go, there is no agreement about the monuments’ fates. Ideas range from traceless destruction to warehouse storage to museum display. Some propose, to quieter applause, to keep the objects in place, accompanied by appropriate labeling.
Again Jersey (and The Donald): Neo-Nazi vs. Anti-Neo-Nazi. One side actually is much, much worse. Hint: It's the one whose member drove into the crowd, killing three and injuring dozens.
I think one is completely meaningless and no cares about them or backs them. The other is backed by the DNC and goes out looking for fights. Donald is far from racist based on his record.
Whether the Taney bust was moved was never very important to me. It was an unattractive head outside a courthouse that I seldom see. To me the important part was that Frederick discussed the issue and that, rather than erasing history, everyone who care about it learned more about history. I know I learned quite a bit from reading different accounts from all sides in the FNP and elsewhere. And now that a Taney statue is a state issue, where a republican governor decided it should be moved, I am especially pleased to confirm that political party is not the dividing line for all political issues, and there is hope even in a country where the president sees little difference between Neo-Nazis and anti-Neo-Nazis.
