Head-turning designs are a signature for Dallas architect firm

Dallas architect 5G Studio Collaborative hits the streets in Dallas with dramatic designs.

In the last week I've written about two new Dallas buildings that couldn't look more different.

The new AC Hotel opening soon north of LBJ Freeway near the Galleria has a dramatic modern front with a twisted white grid.

The other project on Harwood Street in downtown Dallas is a sleek brick and concrete apartment block that takes it design cues from midcentury modern buildings in the neighborhood.

Both projects are by the same architect, Dallas-based 5G Studio Collaborative.

Those are the same folks who did downtown Dallas' Omni Hotel and the new Virgin Hotel in the Design District.

Again, you'd be hard pressed to determine that the Omni and the Virgin have the same design firm lineage.

5G Studio is also working on Deep Ellum's Epic mixed-use development.

And the firm is designing an office in the new 80-acre Railhead development up in Frisco.

In Allen, 5G Studio designed the new hotel and convention center going up on U.S. Highway 75.

While some architects have a signature design aesthetic, 5G Studio's projects are defiantly divergent.

Partner Scott Lowe said this idea "touches the very reason for our firm's existence.

"We simply felt that architects, in general, should be 'expert translators' and not in the business of style, trend or self-expression," Lowe said. "As a result, we've hired a myriad of designers from all parts, cultures, firms, backgrounds and higher learning.

"This gives us the unique ability to match a project's specific aesthetic demands with the appropriately skilled designers and teams," he said. "Bottom line, we have geared our practice and exist to serve.  And it all starts with turning off and listening."

As distinctive as 5G Studio's projects in North Texas are, some of its designs for buildings in Asia take things to an entire different level. From resorts to high-rise residential buildings, the buildings boast eye-popping designs.

Founded in 2005, 5G Studio now has U.S. offices in Dallas, Atlanta, Miami and Indonesia. If you've never heard of them, you haven't been paying attention. Expect to hear a lot more.
